ROOFING, a new study just released by The Freedonia Group, examines U.S. markets for roofing products, materials and systems. Products covered include asphalt shingles, bituminous low-slope roofing products, elastomeric roofing, metal roofing, plastic, concrete and clay roofing tile, wood shingles and shakes, and other roofing materials (e.g., composite panels, slate roofing and green roofs. Additionally, major manufacturers of roofing products are identified and profiled, and the key industry competitive variables are discussed.
Historical data (1999, 2004 and 2009) and forecasts to 2014 and 2019 are provided for roofing product demand (sales) in millions of squares by product type and market (residential and nonresidential new and re-roofing segments). Forecasts are also provided for roofing demand in dollars (including inflation) for the major roofing products and user segments, as well as by detailed geographic regions of the U.S. Roofing accessories, such as snow guards, vents and metal flashings, are not included in the scope of this study. Study highlights include:
• Demand for roofing is forecast to grow 2.4% per year through 2014 to 274.5 million squares, valued at $17.9 billion.
• Demand in the residential re-roofing segment will post minimal gains through 2014, reflecting a return to normal levels from the high base of 2009, which was due to the heavy pattern of storm activity the U.S. experienced in 2008. Advances will also be checked by the ongoing shift from conventional to laminated asphalt shingles, which do not have to be replaced as frequently.
• Laminated asphalt shingles, which totaled only one-third of the shingle market in 1999, are projected to account for 80% of asphalt shingle demand in 2014. Demand for laminated shingles will continue to be driven by their superior aesthetic and performance qualities.
