Correctional Facility Now Recycling Mattresses

The Hutchinson Correctional Facility (HCF) has long been involved in recycling efforts, mostly focusing on aluminum and other metals, paper, wood pallets and cardboard. In recent years the multi-custody prison located in Hutchinson, Kan., has added a number of projects which have garnered recognition and awards for the facility, such as reusing denim from worn out inmate clothing to making quilts for the Salvation Army and other relief agencies, and using inmate labor to sort through trash in order to reroute recyclable materials destined for the local landfill to appropriate recycling centers.

Two Named as Interim Directors at EPA Solid Waste Office

Suzanne Rudzinski and Margaret Guerriero will serve the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s OSWER as acting director and acting deputy director, respectively, of the Office of Resource Conservation and Recovery. This is the office that deals with solid waste issues.

Shingle Recycler Opens in Vancouver

Gemaco Sales Ltd. has opened a shingle recycling operation in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is the first such facility in the region. The facility has purchased a Rotochopper unit for grinding and is selling the finished product into the hot-mix industry.

Demolition: Practices, Technology, and Management, by Richard J. Diven and Mark Shaurette, will be a reference resource for anyone involved in demolition projects, particularly students of construction management and engineering. Covered in the book, developed in cooperation with the National Demolition Association, is the full range of technical and management issues encountered by the demolition contractor and those who hire demolition contractors.

NERC Elects Officers

The Northeast Recycling Council (NERC) has elected Jeff Schmitt, president; Sarah Kite, vice president; and Donald E. Maurer, treasurer. They will serve as the association’s Executive Committee, along with the standing position of secretary held by NERC’s Executive Director Lynn Rubinstein.
